Reading Comprehension

The ability to understand and interpret written text, including identifying main ideas and supporting details.


Reading for Gist

The practice of skimming a text to get a general idea of its content rather than focusing on specific details.

receptive vocabulary

Reduced vowels

Vowels that are pronounced with less emphasis, often turning into a schwa sound (/ə/) in unstressed syllables.


referencing

A cohesive device used to refer backwards and forwards within a text, and sometimes to refer to something outside the text. See anaphoric, cataphoric and exophoric.

Referencing is the use of pronouns, possessivepronouns, possessiveadjectives, demonstratives (this, that, these, those, here, there) and definite articles (the) to refer to something or someone that is mentioned elsewhere in the text, or in the case of exophoric referencing, outside the text.


reflective practice

A method of self-assessment where teachers analyze their teaching experiences to improve their skills and effectiveness.
